An Executor is a particular role/person that is named in a will. You state that there is no will, so there likely is no executor. The situation is known as intestate and the court may indeed appoint the son as an administrator of the estate if there is no objection. There are very specific rules that each state has in regard to intestate succession. If the assets are particularly valuable, it may be prudent to get a competent lawyer involved.
The heirs can get the guns tax free via a Form 5, but the road may not be easy.
