ATF does treat MGs differently....

The difference seems to be down to their efforts to try to improve the quality of NFA records in general--They often take a bit longer than average (although occasionally they're faster), and they seem to get disproportionately assigned to the more experienced examiners.
That isn't because they're MGs, it's because they're esoteric, and many of them were registered and/or transferred at times that paperwork was handled much more casually--It takes fairly specialized knowledge to be able to discriminate between legal changes, registrants incorrectly describing legal guns, and SOTs playing illegal games to try to turn MACs into much more desirable guns.
