back in 1967 but MG's weren't legal in Minnesota.
I got a catalog from J. Curtis Earl in 1971(?) - early catalog with the MGM collection for sale in a special insert, Midas Thompson on another insert.....I was in love (or lust?).
I was looking at the 1928 Tommys on pg 17 and wishing.
They legalized C&R only guns in 1984 (I think?) here but I was married, new postal job, no money.
First Thompson bought from a friend (another postal worker!) in 1999.
Added a Smith and Wesson 76 from Dan Shea in 2002 (that one is the Frankensmith in SAR a couple issues ago)
then found a deal on a STen Mk II in 2007
and last year found another '28 Thompson for sale. Having two kids and only one Thompson, I had to do it, and already had a bunch of drums and mags, parts, etc.
(thanks to my CFO, Mrs postal!)
Got the second TSMG last fall and....a friend mentioned that he had been keeping track of Curtis Earls guns for decades and thought my new one was of those in one of the catalogs. I dug out the very catalog I'd sent $1.75 for back in the early 70's and, there on page 17 is a picture of the late war Savage I now possessed. Looking carefully the serial is the same and this gun is one of those I dreamed about as a kid (S-541758). It's actually in all the catalogs!
I told Mrs postal that the good Lord must have intended for me to have that gun if I'd led a good life and I guess I did. Turned 62 last week and still shooting as much as I can......son is buying a Reising tomorrow that used to belong to Roger Cox so it's in the blood, I guess.
