Post-F1 Approval Reviews: Extar & Tac-13

Stuck at work so I wrote a short rundown on two recently-approved NFA items...

--

Model: Extar EXP Mk 1/2 Hybrid 5.56 SBR, 8.25" barrel, 1:9 twist

Weight: 3lbs 12oz w/ empty ATI 60rnd mag, 5lbs 15oz w/ full mag

Other: The gun is dressed up with an older Sig MPX side-folding stock, ERGO straight grip, and factory XL charging handle.

Est. price as shown: $600, (+$70 w/ mag) *

Approval Time: >13 months via paper F1

Verdict: Unbelievably-light, filling-rattling (sound/blast, not recoil), crowd-pleasing fun. Eats all sorts of garbage ammo, yet is easy to clean due to the simplicity of the bolt & overall design. Perfect for fireball pics and clearing out other bays at the local indoor range, and fairly accurate too w/ iron sights up to ~100 yards. Buy one RTFN now and get ready for some smile headaches.

Would I Form 1 again? Damn right, I already have (two more pistols for myself, two as gifts for family members). The SBR registration was money well spent.

Remington Tac-13 13" 12GA SBS

Weight: 7lbs 15oz **

Capacity (2.75"): 4 (or 5) + 1 (depending on brand)

Other: A Streamlight ProTac 88058 Light is mounted on a GG&G offset mount on the other side (not visible in pic). Stock is a factory Rem V3 stock cut-down ~2" w/ a cheapo slip-on recoil pad (~12" LOP). A big tritium front sight & GG&G tactical charging handle are also installed.

Est. price as shown: $1050 *

///

Compared to my SO's work gun(s):

Beretta 1301 Tactical PG-LE Gen 1 12GA 18.5"; (IOP-restricted title 1)

Weight: 7lbs 13oz **

Capacity (2.75"): 6/7 (or 7/8) + 1, 2.75" (depending on brand + the last shell "ghost-loaded" over the carrier dog)

Est. price as shown: $1050 *

///

Approval Time: ~10 days via eForm

Verdict: This is my first SBS in over a decade. Between the two, it's a draw. Going by the numbers, the Tac-13 falls far short of the 1301; although, the Remington is US-made and the ribbed barrel adds much of character the 1301 lacks. Out on the range, the two are practically identical in terms of accuracy, operation, recoil, features, and so on.

Looking for a sorta-tiny semi-auto shotgun? Get the 1301 Tactical Gen 2 if possible. Otherwise, go with the Tac-13 if you're a traditionalist in search of (virtually) the same tool.

Would I Form 1 again? No. My starter Tac-13 was a gift, but knowing what I know now, I'd pass on assembling the same from scratch; (I'd probably try to hunt down a Tromix instead).

* Registration costs, sales taxes & shipping fees not included

** Weight as shown, fully-loaded with Fiocchi 2.75" 00-buck.
