I cringe when I see gun cleaning instructions to use gun oil on stocks. I've seen what oil does to the bare wood in inletted areas.
On some antique firearms I've had to try to salvage stocks that heavily absorbed gun oil over the last century or longer. Some stocks were too far gone in the wrist area; the wood had turned spongy. Others I was able to heat the stock up in an oven then dump it into a box of grease sweep (or cat litter) to absorb the oils brought to the surface by heating.
